The vintage market is booming — and where there's demand, there are fakes. Reproductions, mislabelled pieces, and outright counterfeits are more common than ever. Here's how to protect yourself and make sure you're getting the real thing.
Check the Tags
The tag is your first line of defence. Authentic vintage pieces have tags that reflect the era they were made in. Here's what to look for:
- Font and printing — Vintage tags have a specific look. The fonts, colours, and printing methods changed over the decades. A 90s Billabong tag looks very different from a 2000s one — and both look very different from a modern reproduction.
- Country of manufacture — Most authentic Y2K surf pieces were made in specific countries (often Australia, USA, or specific Asian manufacturing hubs). Check that the country of manufacture matches the era.
- Care instructions — The format of care instruction labels changed over time. Authentic vintage pieces have care labels that match their era.
Examine the Fabric
Authentic vintage surf pieces were made with fabrics that are noticeably different from modern reproductions. The weight, texture, and feel of a genuine 90s or early 2000s boardshort is distinct. Reproductions often use lighter, cheaper fabrics that don't match the original.
If you can handle the piece, feel the fabric. Genuine vintage has a weight and quality that's hard to fake.
Look at the Construction
Stitching, seams, and hardware are all era-specific. Authentic vintage pieces have construction details that match their time — specific stitch patterns, specific hardware finishes, specific waistband constructions. Reproductions often get these details wrong.
Research the Specific Piece
Before buying any significant vintage piece, research it. Look for original catalogue images, period advertisements, or other authenticated examples. If you're buying an Andy Irons signature boardshort, there should be reference images of the original piece that you can compare against.
